from District 202
As part of an interdisciplinary unit on Medieval Times, Lisle Junior High sixth graders were able to take part in Medieval Performances on Monday, Feb. 6.

Students began this experience in the auditorium to have the world of knights come alive. For an hour, students were able to learn more about the training of a knight, the weapons at their disposal, and a history of battles. There was plenty of interaction throughout this performance, as students volunteered to assist the knights as squires. Students also had to answer a variety of questions the knights asked about weapons and warfare.
Afterwards, students were able to witness nature at work. A falconer with three live birds treated students to an experience they are not likely to forget. In addition to explaining the differences between hawks and falcons, students learned more about the medieval past time of hunting and falconry. The falconer also demonstrated the birds eating habits by feeding them their favorite meal – mice. He also went on to inform students about the important role birds play in the food chain and the environment.

Thanks to donations from the Lisle Education Foundation, students were able to experience exciting parts of the Middle Ages without ever having to leave their school. These presentations will continue to be referenced throughout the rest of our Middle Ages Interdisciplinary Unit.
