KANKAKEE COUNTY — A 29-year-old bicyclist died in a crash with a car Monday morning near Manteno, the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office said.
Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene of the crash involving a passenger vehicle and a bicyclist at approximately 7:41 a.m. Monday on 4000 East Road, approximately one-half mile north of 6000 North Road, east of Manteno.
Deputies and emergency personnel at the scene found the bicyclist unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway.
Members of the Manteno Fire Protection District immediately rendered aid before taking the victim to a local hospital. The victim—identified by authorities as Bailey Caldwell, 29, of Bourbonnais—died from his injuries.
The Illinois State Police are assisting the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office by conducting a comprehensive traffic crash reconstruction. Investigators will continue to examine all available evidence to determine the circumstances that led to the collision, the sheriff's office said.
Due to the investigation, the affected portion of 4000 East Road remained closed for several hours while emergency personnel processed the scene. The roadway has since been reopened to traffic.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Caldwell during this incredibly difficult time," said Sheriff Mike Downey. "This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are also with the driver involved, the witnesses, and the first responders who responded to and assisted at this devastating scene."
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available, the sheriff's office said.
