1 Critically Injured In Single-Vehicle Rollover Crash On Smith Road: Manhattan Fire

MANHATTAN, IL — One person was reportedly in critical condition after a single-vehicle rollover crash on Smith Road Saturday afternoon in Manhattan.

At approximately 4:15 p.m. Saturday, the Manhattan Fire Protection District (MFPD) was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries on the 13000 block of Smith Road.

Based on the information received, the incident was upgraded to an extrication response, which brought additional companies and a medical helicopter to the scene.

The first units arrived on scene within six minutes of the initial call for service and found a single vehicle off the roadway, resting on its roof, with one patient trapped inside.

Crews stabilized the vehicle and extricated the patient. A medical helicopter landed at the scene, and the flight crew assisted MFPD personnel with patient care during ground transport to Silver Cross Hospital, where the patient was taken in critical condition.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Will County Sheriff's Office. Smith Road is expected to be closed for an extended period of time, and motorists are asked to seek alternate routes and to avoid the area.

Crews from the New Lenox Fire Protection District and the East Joliet Fire Protection District assisted at the scene. The Frankfort Fire Protection District and the Monee Fire Protection District provided coverage at Manhattan Station 81 for any additional calls for service during that time.
