New Location Chosen For Manhattan Post Office: USPS

MANHATTAN, IL — The United States Postal Service this week issued final word of a new location for Manhattan's post office, according to a release.

The Postal Service has identified 24520 S. US Highway 52 for the new post office, pending a final agreement being reached with the property owners. If an agreement can't be reached, the agency said it will consider other sites.

The Postal Service began researching alternative locations last year, with postcards seeking input on a future location sent to residents and businesses in August and September 2025.

"The Postal Service has carefully considered all the concerns expressed in the input received, as well as in comments received from the public," the agency said this week. "For reasons set forth below, the Postal Service has decided to proceed with the relocation."

The Postal Service cited space deficiency at its current location as necessitating a new one.

"The Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the Manhattan community and has carefully considered community input in reaching its relocation decision," the Postal Service said. "The decision supports Postal Service objectives and operational needs to continue to serve the Manhattan community. The Postal Service is a self-funded entity, generally receiving no tax dollars and must make decisions to control cost and cover them through the sale of products and services."

The agency said it anticipates providing the same services at the new location as are currently provided to customers at the existing location.

Services will continue at the existing post office until the replacement facility is open and operating. A timeline for the new facility's opening was not provided.
