Coin Toss to Decide Another Illinois Election

Two candidates for village board in a tiny Central Illinois town received the same number of votes.

WAPELLA, IL - The result of a coin toss will now determine the winner in more than one local election in Illinois.

In Wapella, a town of about 700 citizens just south of Bloomington and north of Decatur, two village board candidates would up in a tie for third place (in an election in which three would be elected) after absentee ballots were counted this week.

Sherry Mears of the People's Party and Reggie Westfall of the Citizen's Party both received 90 votes in this month's election, according to a report from the Clinton Journal.

Both candidates will be invited to participate in a coin toss conducted by the DeWitt County Clerk to determine the winner. Mears and Westfall were both just seven votes shy of the top vote-getter in the race. Suzanna Holland received the most votes with 97 and Mandy Huff was second with 91.

The winner of the coin toss will represent the residents of Wapella, one of Illinois' smallest municipalities that only boasts a handful of businesses. Among them are a popular Circle H. Boot western store.

Last week, it was reported that the mayoral race in an even tinier Colp, Illinois ended in a dead heat, with both candidates Tammy O’Daniell-Howell and Bryan Riekena receiving just 11 votes.
