If you have an interest in the American Civil War and want to learn what it was like to be in a Union camp in 1862, you will not want to miss this event. The Manhattan Township Historical Society will be hosting an outdoor living history event from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 255 South State Street. This is a free event for all ages.
A Cavalry company will be on hand with live horses and will present the equipment and battle techniques associated with mounted soldiers. An Artillery unit will display a cannon and ammunition cart, and show how the cannon would have been loaded and fired. Due to the proximity of buildings in town, the cannon will not be fired but can be closely examined.
The Infantry will set up a small tent area featuring a typical camp displaying food rations, weaponry and the typical personal equipment an infantryman would carry. There will be periodic infantry drills presenting marching, weapon handling and actual musket fire. The ‘boys’ are a friendly lot and have been known to coax willing members of the public to join in and try their hand at drills and marching with the troops.

The reenactors generally try to stay ‘in character’ portraying 1860s soldiers, but will happily break character to answer any questions you may have. This event is free and for the whole family and will be interactive, educational and entertaining.
The Museum will also be open to the public from 10 am to 2 pm. See the newest exhibit on One-Room Country Schools. Could you pass the eighth-grade final test? Other new exhibits have been added to the renovated main gallery.
