Manhattan Man Tried To Tackle Cop Who Gave Him Ride: Police

MANHATTAN, IL - A Manhattan man who had the police called on him twice in one night this week is accused of attempting to tackle a sheriff's deputy who helped take him to a hotel after a domestic situation at the Schoolhouse Road home where he resides.

Will County Sheriff's police say that Matthew Gilbert attempted to tackle the deputy after multiple officers drove him from Manhattan to the LaQuinta Inn on 183rd Street in Tinley Park Tuesday night. Police had already been called to the Manhattan home by a family member twice earlier that night.

The first time, police said the family member told them Gilbert had been drinking and arguing and that they just wanted him to go to bed. Police deputies left after "calming the situation," according to the report.

But five minutes later they were called back to the scene by the family member who said Gilbert began arguing again as soon as they left the first time. This time, Gilbert wasn't in the residence and was found "hiding underneath a large pine tree in the backyard."

Gilbert asked police to drive him to the Tinley Park hotel so he could avoid the domestic argument, which they did according to the report. But on the ride from Manhattan to Tinley he "became verbally abusive" to the police deputies that were taking him there.

"Upon arriving at the hotel and opening the back door of the squad Matthew attempted to tackle the deputy," the report states. "Matthew continued to resist while deputies attempted to place him in custody."

He then spent the night at the Will County Adult Detention Facility and now faces a charge of aggravated battery to a police officer.
