Manhattan Park District Director Steps Down

Julie Popp has been with the district since 1998.

MANHATTAN, IL — The Manhattan Park District this week announced the resignation of Executive Director Julie Popp. In her resignation letter, Popp said she's been with the district for two decades.

"I began my career with the Manhattan Park District in 1998, when I found myself wanting to be a part of this community," Popp wrote. "Soon after, I discovered my passion for Parks and Recreation," she added, saying she began serving as a park board commissioner before accepting the executive director role in 2001.

"I dedicated 20 years to this important leadership role, and appreciate all the amazing opportunities in being a part of shaping Manhattan's future, Popp said, adding that it was with "heartfelt sadness" that she announced her resignation.

"Now it is time that I move on to pursue new opportunities," she said. " I will take with me great memories of many successes and a love for the Manhattan Park District."

In an Oct. 25 letter accepting Popp's resignation, the park board expressed gratitude, saying Popp has agreed to stay on during a search for a new director.

"This search will be conducted by the Illinois Association of Park Districts," the board said in the statement, which thanked Popp for her years of service and volunteer efforts.

"Her success in fulfilling the leadership role brought Manhattan Park District several millions of additional revenue through grants and partnerships, the acquisition of 186 acres of park land, a recreation center, numerous park developments, sound financial stability and much more," the board said in the letter. " ... The Manhattan Park District wishes Julie the best in all her future endeavors."

In an email to Patch, Popp said she will remain with the park district through Feb. 15, 2018, and will continue to accept applications for a vacancy on the board of commissioners. The board is seeking candidates to fill a spot left by Lauren Carlson's resignation in June. To be eligible, candidates must be residents of the Manhattan Park District and registered voters. Interested candidates should contact Popp at the Manhattan Park District Office, 397 S. State St., or at 815-478-3324
