MANHATTAN, IL — The owners of Peaceful Grounds Coffee Company will close its Manhattan café effective March 29, they announced on social media Monday morning.

Owned by siblings Holly Barajas and Jonathan Tough, with mother Cheryl and stepfather Paul Wellman, Peaceful Grounds Coffee opened in December 2024, at 25626 S. Gougar Road. The café combined the family members' enthusiasm for a sip of something piping hot with a deep appreciation for the small town they called home.

In January 2025, the owners expanded the concept and unveiled The Manhattan Speakeasy, a unique addition to its space featuring illicit vibes, specialty cocktails and a lounge feel.

Though they're closing the Manhattan café, the owners stated that they would reopen soon in an undisclosed location.

"After much thought and reflection, we will be closing our Manhattan location following normal business hours on Sunday, March 29," the social media post reads. "Manhattan is home. It’s where this dream began, where relationships were built, and where so many memories were made. This space has held laughter, connection, healing, and community in the most beautiful way—and saying goodbye is not easy.

"While this chapter is coming to a close, a new one is beginning. We are stepping into a new location that will carry the same heart and intention you’ve come to know and love: a cozy, welcoming space, delicious, thoughtfully crafted beverages, and all the good vibes that make Peaceful Grounds what it is."

Barajas and her brother grew up in nearby New Lenox; her stepfather grew up in Mokena. All three are Lincoln-Way Central alumni. The family also owns Frankfort-based Integrity Manufacturing, Inc., they previously told Patch.

The owners went on to host vendors' markets, themed events, trivia nights, classes, live music and more at the Manhattan café. They have not yet disclosed where the new location will be, but follow them on Facebook for the latest updates and announcements.
