'My Country, I Don't Want Any Minorities Here': Kankakee Co. Sheriff's Employee Fired Over Remarks

KANKAKEE COUNTY — A Kankakee County Sheriff's Office employee was fired after a social media video surfaced depicting "insensitive and derogatory remarks" made by the employee, the sheriff's office said Wednesday.

In the video, the sheriff's office employee is heard saying, "I don't give a (expletive). This is my (expletive) country, I don't want any minorities here. That's how it is."

The sheriff's office said it became aware of the video overnight and took action.

During that conversation, the employee made insensitive and derogatory remarks that are "completely inconsistent with the values, professionalism, and standards expected of every member of this agency," the office said in a release.

"This type of language and conduct has no place in the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office or within our community," said Sheriff Mike Downey. "We have worked diligently to build and maintain strong relationships founded on trust, respect, and collaboration with all members of our community, including the Kankakee County Hispanic Partnership and the local NAACP. We want to be absolutely clear that the behavior displayed in this video is unacceptable, does not reflect the values of this agency, and will not be tolerated under any circumstances."
