Obituary: Howard Mantooth

Howard Mantooth of Kankakee passed away on Jan. 12.

Howard F. Mantooth, 91, of Kankakee, passed away on Friday, Jan. 12, at his son’s home in Kankakee. He was born on April 23, 1926, in Bradley County, Tennessee, to Alpheus and Grace Hayes Mantooth. Howard married Jo Collins on Sept. 15, 1967 in Bloomington.

Mantooth was a retired employee of CarQuest. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Princeton. He enjoyed working on cars and racing them. He loved to sing.

Mantooth is survived by his wife, Jo Mantooth; eight sons and eight daughters-in-law, Robert and Cathy Mantooth, of Tennessee, Joseph and ChanYe Mantooth, of Alabama, John and Irene Mantooth, Lamar and Cindy Mantooth, of California, Jeffery and Mary Collins, Harold and Jennifer Talbott-Mantooth, of Washington, Ronald and Cyndee Mantooth, and Douglas and Jennifer Mantooth; two daughters, Linda Singleton, of North Carolina and Anita Davis, of Tennessee; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and one sister, Virgie Toomey, of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Wayne, Herman, Leonard, and Hugh; one sister, Gladys; and one grandson, John Mantooth.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Clancy-Gernon-Hertz Funeral Home in Kankakee. Pastor Wright Eavenson will officiate. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Elm Lawn Memorial Park in Princeton.
