3 Charged After Report Of Stolen Car In Mokena

Mokena police charged three alleged offenders after a search for suspects in a car theft and vehicle burglary case.

MOKENA, IL -- Mokena police arrested a total of three men after a two-hour search in the middle of the night that began when a resident called to report their 2015 Hyundai Elantra had been stolen.

When arriving in the 19900 block of Catherine Drive around 3:30 a.m. on July 25, police noticed several other vehicles in the area had apparently been burglarized.

During the investigation, officers noticed two black men in the 10600 block of Willow Lane and when one of the officers attempted to stop them for questioning they ran. One subject was caught after a brief foot pursuit while the other temporarily got away.

The search, with the help of police officers from Frankfort, New Lenox and Will County, lasted until 4:50 a.m. That's when they found one subject in the 19900 block of Therese Lane, where police say he was caught entering a car that had been reported stolen out of South Holland. A short time later, a third suspect was arrested in the 19700 block of Scarth Lane.

The Hyundai that was originally reported stolen was found around that time a short distance from the victim's residence, according to police.

Charged in the incident were Xzavier Smith, 19, South Holland; Keyontay R. Garolds, 18, Chicago and Kenneth Y. Jones Jr., 18, of Gary, Indiana.

Smith was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

Garolds was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and Jones Jr. with residential burglary, burglary, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of stolen credit cards, motor vehicle theft and burglary to a motor vehicle.
