Animal Shelter In Danger Of Closing Permanently: How You Can Help

NAWS still has dogs in desperate need of adoption, and donations of supplies are badly needed.

MOKENA, IL — As the coronavirus pandemic creates tough times for most, every business and organization is also facing challenges, and the NAWS Humane Society of Illinois in Mokena is no exception. According to its GoFundMe page, the society is in danger of closing permanently and there are still several dogs available for adoption.

This week's adoptable pet is Arthur, an almost 1-year-old male terrier. The society said he still has a lot of lovable puppy energy, and is working on his training. He is smart and treat-motivated, and has already learned "sit."

Arthur is social and affectionate, the society said. He is always ready to go for a walk or play, and he gets along great with other dogs.

According to its GoFundMe, most of the cats at the society have been placed into foster homes. NAWS has dogs available for adoption by appointment only.

"It is a very strange feeling walking into such a quiet environment. Still hoping for a loan to keep the doors open," founder and board chair Stacy Gaskins shared on GoFundMe on March 31.

Animal Shelters Feel Pinch Amid Coronavirus Shutdown

NAWS isn't the only area animal shelter feeling the strain of coronavirus. More pets will likely need help as those struggling financially will not be able to care for them, Illinois animal shelter officials told Patch this week.
