'Build-A-Bun' Sandwich Shop Opens in Frankfort

Frankfort residents Don and Vicki Melton are the owners of the new Build-A-Bun sandwich shop in the former Always Open location at 6 Elwood Street, Frankfort. They welcome the community to stop by to try the large selection of sandwiches and craft beers on the menu in their newly-remodeled shop.

Along with their classic hot dogs, they serve fresh sandwiches including Italian beef, chipotle chicken, pulled pork, corned beef, turkey and many others. They also feature burgers cooked to order, vegan items and a kids’ menu. Diners can customize their sandwich by choosing from several different kinds of meats, breads and cheeses, as well as a large assortment of fresh toppings. They also offer a “build your own” salad option and an impressive variety of craft beers, wines and sodas. Breakfast is available on Saturday and Sunday.

The couple began their business in 2010 with a mobile hot dog cart after Don passed his training at Hot Dog University run by Vienna Beef of Chicago. They quickly became a mainstay of local area events including the Frankfort Country Market, Cruisin’ Lockport, Bluegrass Festival and the Will County Forest Preserves annual Fall Fest. In May of this year, they revamped the former Always Open store into their new sandwich shop, with Don doing most of the carpentry work himself. They enjoyed a successful opening of their store on August 14, just prior to the Frankfort Fall Fest.

For your special outing, they also offer custom picnic baskets and blankets to be borrowed and returned to the shop afterwards. This option is perfect for a picnic on Breidert Green or the regular Frankfort events such as Cruisin’ Frankfort Car Show, Concert on the Green nights or the Bluegrass Festival.

Located right downtown adjacent to Breidert Green and the Frankfort Trail, Build-A-Bun is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The sandwich shop offers free Wi-Fi, accepts credit card or cash payments and there is an ATM on site.
