The free, all-ages Forest Preserve District of Will County program is from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville. Register online or call 815-722-9301.
The program features a live reading of the author's powerful children’s book, "I Am Not a Costume," followed by a chance to purchase a copy and have it signed.
The story follows 5-year-old Ayasha, who learns to stand proud in her culture after classmates treat Native regalia as a costume. DesJarlait, a preschool teacher in Illinois, writes stories that reflect the lives of contemporary Native children and encourage them to dream big.
The reading and book signing is is a complementary program for the The “I Am Not a Costume” Story Exhibit, which runs through April 12 at the museum. The exhibit is sponsored by The Nature Foundation of Will County.
