Civil War

My great grandfather came in from Ireland in August 1861 just a couple of months after the civil war started. All the Irish men from 16-40 were drafted in the Union army immediately upon landing at Ellis Island. My grandfather was not a typical Irish bs guy. He saw very little action and was mainly in logistics (support troops in our present lingual). In June 1865 he was honorably discharged. He went south instead of to NY or Chicago like most Irish. He settled in Beaufort where he meet a nice Norwegian girl and got Married. In 1878 they moved to Hayfield, MN. Everyone in Hayfield hated the Catholics, so he said he was a Norwegian. Of course his Irish got the best him they opened a bar in Hayfield. Finally they were forced out by Lutherans because they found out they were Catholic. They ended up in Ladysmith, WI and had a small resort on a lake. through marriage and things most of the family moved south to Chicago at the end of the first world war. No one gave my ancestors anything. They got whatever from hard and personal responsibility. I say all this because I was recently was called some vicious names because I don't agree with the rioters and the haters. America was great for me and all my ancestors not because we were Irish and Norwegians, but because we worked hard and took pride in what we accomplished and we did for others along the way.
