Felony DUI Charges Filed in Head-on Collision
Mokena police said an Orland Park man was driving nearly three times the legal blood-alcohol limit on March 31 when he entered oncoming traffic and struck another car head-on. The driver of that car was treated for several injuries.

Felony DUI charges were filed earlier this month following an accident on March 31 that sent one man to the hospital with broken ribs, a collapsed lung and bruising on his heart.
Joseph P. Maas, 45, of the 15400 block of Treetop Drive in Orland Park was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid accident and improper lane usage.
Police said Maas , sending himself and a 60-year-old man to Silver Cross Hospital. According to the report, blood tests measured Maas’ blood-alcohol level at 0.236—nearly three times the legal limit.

The man Maas hit suffered broken ribs, a collapsed lung, bruising on his leg and lacerations to his face, police said, and he was having trouble, when police interviewed him the next day, remembering what happened.
A member of the man’s family later told police that doctors had found contusions on his heart that were attributed to the accident, but he was expected to recover.

Maas, according to police, was examined by medical staff and released shortly thereafter.
On April 3, the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges of DUI against Maas, who turned himself over the same day.
Police reports show he was remorseful about what had happened and asked officers to extend his apology to the hospitalized man and his family.
