Fourth Of July Fireworks Show Planned In Mokena

Details on parking and location will be determined, Mayor Frank Fleischer said.

MOKENA, IL — While the annual Fourth of July parade in Mokena has been canceled, the village will still have a fireworks show, Mayor Frank Fleischer said at the June 8 village board meeting.

"We will have fireworks the night of the Fourth of July, and that's for sure," Fleischer said.

Details on parking and location will be determined, Fleischer said.

The Mokena Chamber of Commerce announced the parade cancellation June 6.

"We waited to come to this decision while we explored as many alternate ideas and solutions as possible," the chamber said on its Facebook page. "This decades long tradition is so important to our chamber, and we know how cherished it is by our residents and our business community as well."

Fleischer also said a letter from CEO and President of Silver Cross Hospital Ruth Colby indicated "everything is looking great in region 7." Silver Cross Hospital is part of region 7 of Illinois' Emergency Response System, which is the same region in which Mokena is located.

"Things are looking better, we're moving forward," Fleischer said, adding that he wished Gov. J.B. Pritzker would change the 28 days between phases to 14 days.

"It's not the mayors," Fleischer said. "The mayors would open up their communities if they could."
