A library card is the coolest card – September is Library Card Sign-up Month

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Mokena Community Public Library District joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all – a free library card.

Resources at the Mokena Community Public Library District are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement. From books to technology, education to entertainment, we have it all at Mokena Community Public Library District. The library houses over 90,000 titles in print, a large collection of eBooks and magazines and over 35 online subscription databases and our new Virtual Reality Station.

Students can use their library cards from home too. Our library offers access to important educational resources such as eBooks and reference resources 24/7 online at www.mokenalibrary.org. Students will have access to literary criticism, science and technology, language courses, readers’ advisory and much more. These resources include Gale Virtual Reference Library with over 300 research books and Tutor.com for students in grades K-12 and college students. Access to Tutor.com is available 10:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., seven days a week.

Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies, learn how to use a 3D printer or just relax with friends. There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card.”

Throughout the course of the month, the library will host a number of activities, including a Minecraft tournament, Yoga classes for both adults and children, the Shark Shredders (paper shredding event), an adult coloring group, and the annual fall Friends of the Library book sale.
