Mokena Amends Zoning To Allow For Crematoriums
Now that it's approved, a crematorium is only allowed as a special use in the I-1 industrial district.
MOKENA, IL — At its meeting on Monday, the Mokena Village Board approved an amendment to its zoning ordinance to allow for crematoriums within Mokena's limits.
Director of Economic and Community Development Alan Zordan said during the meeting that Jacob Vandenberg, of Vandenberg Funeral Home, has submitted a request for a crematorium. Previously, the Village did not allow crematoriums in any zoning district.
Now that it's approved, a crematorium is only allowed as a special use in the I-1 industrial district. It also must be separated 500 feet from residential and public zonings, board documents state.

The board previously held a public hearing about the zoning amendment on Sept. 17, and the Planning Commission has also recommended the amendment, according to board documents.
The zoning ordinance has been amended, but the request from Vandenberg for a crematorium has not yet been approved. The village board went into work session to discuss the request.
