Mokena Girl Scouts Celebrate Group's 100th: VIDEO

With games, treats, a Friendship Circle and a rousing round of "Happy Birthday," Girl Scouts from Mokena wished the organization a happy 100th.

The various troops of Mokena Girl Scout Service Unit 741 gathered Monday night at to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts' founding.

The celebration culminated when the girls and their mothers formed a Friendship Circle to honor the group formed in 1912. The circle started at 7:12 p.m., or 19:12 military time.

"I can't believe it's made it 100 years and I'm so glad to be a part of it," said fifth-grader Elizabeth Sanders, 10.

Sanders' younger sister Emily, 7, is also in Girl Scouts.

"We had a Christmas party. My favorite part about Girl Scouts is Christmas," the MES first-grader said, singing the second "Christmas."

kindergartner Grace Golebiowski, 6, said her favorite part of the Girls Scouts is the crafts.

Friend Sophia Bastas, 6, said her favorite part of the 100th birthday was "going in the jumpy with Grace and Michelle."

As for Bastas, when asked about scouting, she proudly stated: "I sell Girl Scout cookies."

Cookie sales paid for the event and raised money for Lambs Fold Shelter in Joliet, said Troop 980 leader Melanie Kolsto. Her troop, based out of MIS, organized the event.

The money will go for birthday parties for children staying at the shelter, which houses women and children made homeless by domestic violence.

"That's how they're earning their Bronze Awards, by providing birthday parties for kids who don't get birthday parties," Kolsto said.
