Mokena Home Catches Fire After Storm

Firefighters in Mokena put out a blaze in the 17800 block of Haas Road late Wednesday afternoon.

MOKENA, IL -- A home in Mokena caught fire late Wednesday afternoon after a thunderstorm roared through the area.

Mokena Fire Chief Howard Stephens said no one was home at the residence in the 17800 block of Haas Road when it caught fire just before 911 was called at 4:59 p.m. There were no reported injuries.

Fire crews arrived and found that there was "fire presenting through the roof." Neighbors told firefighters that they saw a "bright blue flash of light and a very loud explosion" before the house caught on fire, Stephens said.

The fire was successfully extinguished within an hour.
