Mokena Library Gets Grant Worth $30K From Secretary Of State

The money will be used to expand the library's existing programs.

MOKENA, IL — Mokena Community Public Library District has been awarded $30,295.03 from the Illinois Secretary of State, according to a news release from the Secretary of State. The money comes from Illinois Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants.

"We're looking to use [the grant money] toward some of our family programming here at the library," said Mokena Community Public Library District Executive Director Cathy Palmer. "Another spot we're to is collection development, whether it be books or [audio/video]. And we're also looking to add some additional wifi hotspots for our patrons to check out."

The Library District can use the money for a variety of programs and resources, including:

  • Large print material for aging patrons.
  • Books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs.
  • Audiobooks and eBooks.
  • Home visit book delivery service.
  • New computers, iPads and printers.
  • Spanish and dual language materials.
  • Expanded access to online resources.
  • Adult programming.
  • Newsletters, postcards and other promotional materials.

This year, grant money was up to $1.475 per capita from $1.25 the previous year, according to the news release.

“I am extremely proud of the outstanding service Illinois’ public libraries provide to all residents," Secretary of State Jesse White said. "I truly believe libraries are cornerstones of our communities, and I am pleased to provide this increased funding to help them serve the public.”
