MOKENA, IL — After her ALS diagnosis, one Mokena resident and her family are raising awareness and funds for ALS, and will also take part in the Les Turner ALS Foundation’s ALS Walk for Life on Sept. 15 in Chicago. Lori Kahle Hoover, of Mokena, said in a release she has always been highly independent, but is now learning to accept help from others.

The 62-year-old started experiencing weakness in her right hand last fall and headed to the doctor. She was told arthritis may be the cause, and her doctor ordered several tests. According to a release, a few month's later, Kahle Hoover's right hand muscles were continuing to atrophy and other muscles were twitching.

Kahle Hoover saw a neurologist, who ordered even more tests. The doctor suspected she had ALS and suggested a second opinion. According to a release, Kahle Hoover went to a neurologist at the Les Turner ALC Center at Northwestern Medicine in May, and the ALS diagnosis was confirmed.

“Life has changed, but I try to do as much for myself as I’m able to,” Kahle Hoover said in a release. “I need help with everyday tasks that most people don’t think twice about doing. For example, someone must cut my food and style my hair. I’m so grateful to have a supportive husband, two sons, a daughter-in-law and my sister Donna Cain who help with anything I need.”

Since her diagnosis, Kahle Hoover's right hand and arm, as well as her voice muscles, have weakened significantly. According to the release, she takes Radicava, a medication approved in May 2017 for ALS treatment. Kahle Hoover attributes the medication to helping slow the progression of her slurred speech.
