Noonan Academy Hosts First Scholastic Chess Tournament of the 2019/2020 School Year

Noonan Elementary Academy is an independent Catholic school in Mokena serving preschool through 8th grade. On Friday, October 18th Noonan’s Chess Team hosted the first Scholastic Chess Tournament of the 2019-2020 school year. Ninety-nine players competed from Prairie View Middle School (Tinley Park), St. Joseph (Summit), Fox Valley Chess Team, St. Jude (New Lenox), Nancy Young Elementary (Aurora), St. Mary (Mokena), Cardinal Bernardin (Orland Hills), St. Ethelreda (Chicago), St. Alphonsas/St. Patrick (Lemont), St . Alexander (Palos Heights), St. Joseph (Lockport), Everest Academy (Lemont), Gordo Gregory Middle School (Naperville), and Noonan Academy.
Noonan Academy’s K-1 Team, consisting of Kindergartener Sonny Valentini, and 1st Graders William Kush and Graham Urbaniak took first. Valentini also placed third overall in the K-1 division. 2018 Noonan Alumni, Christian Kush, took 3rd Place in the High School/Adult division. The Noonan Chess program is overseen by Assistant Principal Mrs. Mary Murphy.
