Rep. McDermed Hosting Free ID Theft Seminar

State Representative Margo McDermed is hosting an informational identity theft prevention and protection workshop

State Representative Margo McDermed is hosting an informational identity theft prevention and protection workshop to help residents avoid becoming a victim. The seminar is on Tuesday September 10th from 10am-noon at the Frankfort Public Library and will be taught by a member of the Illinois Comptroller’s Office.

“Illinois has a high rate of identity theft and seniors are the most susceptible to these thieves,” Rep. McDermed said. “With my events and legislation, I’ve made it clear one of my main priorities while in office has been to protect our residents and those most vulnerable.”

This past spring, Rep. McDermed sponsored legislation to add protections for medical ID theft victims specifically to the criminal code. When your medical identity is stolen it can be used to steal expensive medical services, prescription drugs, to procure medical devices or equipment, to falsify insurance claims, or to acquire government benefits like Medicare and Medicaid. Adding medical and health insurance information to the definitions of identity theft in the Illinois Criminal Code will help protect victims from being sued by medical providers and ordered to pay for services they never received.
