Rep. McDermed Hosting Free Self Defense Class

State Representative Margo McDermed Hosting Free Self Defense Class

Mokena, IL…. State Representative Margo McDermed (R-Mokena), together with One Light Self Defense, is hosting a free workshop for women and girls. The event will help them learn avoidance tactics, self-defense misconceptions, offensive techniques and defensive escapes. The class will take place in the community room at the Mokena Public Library on Thursday, June 30th at 5:30pm.

“Instructors from One Light will be on hand to give a basic understanding of how to avoid becoming a victim of violence and teach skills that can be used in the event of an attack,” Rep. McDermed said. “I highly recommend women and girls over 12 attend this workshop, as it will be very useful to them.”

The One Light mission is to prepare people to avoid, face, and heal from physical violence. Since 2009, One Light has traveled to Nairobi, Kenya to teach self-defense skills to girls and trainers who continue to carry on this skill transfer. One Light has taught about 100 free self-defense workshops and trained about 2500 people in the United States. Thousands of dollars of donations from workshops have been donated to Women At Risk International to use towards their emergency and safe house funds.
