Swastikas Spotted Again On Signs In Mokena

A similar incident occurred in October.

MOMENA, IL — For the second time in recent months, swastikas have been drawn on property downtown Mokena and local activists are now calling on the village to address the issue. Amanda Herman, a member of South Suburban Activists, was driving home from church on Sunday when she spotted the swastikas on signs near village hall and the police station, according to ABC 7.

Signs near First and Division and First and Midland Avenue were among the property defaced in the recent incident, according to a post on the South Suburban activists Facebook page.

Police have been notified and the local group is encouraging residents to call the village and ask them to take the situation seriously “this time,” according to the group’s Facebook page.

Swatiskas were also found on street signs in the village in October.

“There's no indication this is anything more than kids tagging the signs," Mokena Police Chief Steve Vaccaro said following the October discovery, indicating there's no reason for residents to be concerned about any hate groups entering the area.

ABC 7 reports that the village administrator e-mailed the following statement regarding the graffiti reported this past week: "The Village condemns such hate crimes and will prosecute, as allowed by law, those individuals responsible for this crime."
