Village Board Approves 2015 Tax Levy

While more taxes have been collected by the village this year, the tax rate is actually going down.

MOKENA, IL - The Mokena Village Board approved a tax levy for 2015 that won’t dramatically raise or lower tax rates for residents. The board was able to avoid raising tax rates due to an increase in the number of property owners in Mokena and rising property values, Finance Director Barb Damron told the Chicago Tribune.

The total amount of taxes levied in 2015, $1,864,322, represents an overall increase from 2014, but Damron told the Tribune the tax rate has actually dropped from 0.2597 in 2014 to 0.2577 in 2015. The money raised by the new levy will help the village fulfill pension and retirement obligations. Because the increase was less than 5 percent, no public hearing was required to pass the levy.

In November, Damron had initially proposed an increase in the tax rate, which Village Board members opposed.
