Union Street Gallery is exhibiting 53 works of art from all over the nation that explore all aspects of food and its cultural significance including cultivation, distribution, preparation, consumption, and appreciation. This exhibit includes creative reflections on the aesthetic qualities of food; art that addresses the political, economic, and social dimensions of food production and consumption; and art that focus on traditions surrounding food or how we use food as a rich form of cultural communication.

This exhibit was juried by artist, educator, and curator Shannon Stratton. Shannon is a professional artist, the Director of ThreeWalls gallery, and teacher at the Art Institute in Chicago. Stratton chose work that struck the perfect balance between blunt, beautiful, and clever, covering many different aspects of the food theme. The exhibit draws the viewer into the conversations about food created by the art rather than smacking them in the face with it, which makes for a much more compelling show.

The opening reception is Friday February 27th, 6-9pm. Many of the exhibiting artists will be there to discuss their work and refreshments will be served. The award winners will be announced at 7:30pm

As part of the exhibit, Chicago artist and chef Eric May will do an artist talk at Union Street Saturday Saturday March 7th, 1-3pm. Eric’s work frames conversations about food through cooking, writing, and hosting participatory events and public interventions.
