James Bond is Watching

You may think your emails can't be traced back to you. Think again.

What happens when you send or get an email is a mystery for many, but for us in the know, it’s a story of James Bond proportions.

Recently I was asked to trace down via email the IP (Internet Protocol) address, which is like your home address or phone number (very traceable). I was asked by a local law enforcement group to trace down this IP and detail information, which in this case could place a person in jail. It’s amazing that people think just because it’s the internet nobody can find me, and that is far from the truth. Most ISP (Internet Service Providers) keep these trace logs for years allowing people like me and others to track you down like James Bond.

I was reading in the paper about a mayor that got caught using email that traced back to him. I also read about a county person routing email via an account back to their home account trying to cover tracks. The thing is, don’t these people understand it’s all traceable back, and to a level that points directly to them? This even relates to websites, because when you register a website it is logged to traceable information.

It’s amazing in this day and age people think just because I can do it that it is not accountable. The good thing is email spammers are now being tracked down and bounced from your email programs even before this junk gets to you. The use of IP tracking allows great things to happen. It is the internet thumb print to allow super James Bond people easy ways to take you down and out.

So all you emailers, all you spammers, and all you running for office, James Bond is watching and taking notes on you. So maybe you should stop filling my email. Maybe use the regular mail, at least that is harder to trace.

CAW (Cool Application of Week) – More of an Internet tool to trace like James Bond: Network-Tools is a great basic tool to trace down information about an IP in your email or router. I used it once to trace a router IP address trying to hack into a client’s office, and traced it back to China. We turned them away with a simple setup in the router. (So James Bond like.) So give this a try, it’s fun to be “Bond, James Bond.” If only I could get the cool cars!
