Windows, I Don't Do Windows!

With a new operating system in the offing, the Windows are changing... maybe.

Its coming: the new Windows System 8. So.

Many in the tech field will go crazy telling you this and that, but the real story will be somewhere in the middle. What’s Windows 8 got over Windows 7? Well, a bunch of fixes, enhanced tools and more of a focus on what you see ("Graphical User Interface," or GUI). The blending of a new XBOX-360 style interface will be included but so will the standard GUI. The new XBOX-like look and feel (called Metro) is more like using a touch-screen cell phone, where you move things in and out.

The under-the-hood stuff is where things get better. Faster boot-up, Fast I/O (meaning getting the data from the hardware) and support for other processors, along with faster auxiliary power unit (a new computer processor with graphics engine together), and cleaner coding—smaller code needed to do more things.

The big questions are, will I need it, and should I upgrade when it comes out in 2012?

The answer to both is a maybe at this point. The enhanced items do and will make life better for applications, but are they worth the savings of seconds on boot times and other related things? In any business, being on the bleeding edge means you get cut, and many will and should take the wait-and-see approach. So for me, the answer is Windows 7 for now, and I'll wait a few months after Windows 8 is released. And then, maybe.

I will be covering more on Windows 8 in the future along with Android 3.1. One note on what is happening with Google and the owners of the under-layers of the Droid OS: it should not affect you today but tomorrow...
