Democrat Alexi Giannoulias Endorses Tom Cross for Treasurer

The former treasurer says Tom Cross understands the office and is willing to work across the aisle for what's best.

State Rep. Tom Cross (R-Oswego) received the endorsement Sunday of former Democratic state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias who, speaking on WGN Radio on Sunday, said Cross is a better choice for treasurer than Democrat Mike Frerichs, a state senator from Champaign.

“While I’m a proud Democrat, proud of what we have done, I do think there are certain people who run for office on both sides who are willing to reach across the aisle. I’ve known Tom Cross for awhile. I think he’s got courage. I think he’s a good guy,” Giannoulias said, adding that Cross “understands the role (of treasurer) and when we talk about people willing to break with their party and do what’s right, I think he represents one of those people.”

Giannoulias served one term as state treasurer. In 2010, he ran for the U.S. Senate but lost to Mark Kirk. He’s now at BNY Mellon Wealth Management.
