District 308 Students Advance in the 51st Annual National Achievement Scholarship Program

School District 308 would like to recognize OHS senior Nicole Thompson and OEHS senior James Jones for their hard work in becoming finalists in the 51st Annual National Achievement Scholarship Program.

More than 1,600 black American high school seniors are competing for about 800 scholarships worth about $2.5 million offered next spring. Information about the about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership ability employment, and honors and awards are all considered.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and is privately financed without government assistance. It began in 1964 as a way to recognize academically promising black students for their achievements. To date, about 33,500 young men and women received the Achievement Scholarship award, totaling to about $105 million.
