Aurora Township Fire Department Chief Robert Watermann said that O’Malley had served for several years as a mentor to boy scouts within the ATFD and was much loved by the members.
“He was the guy in the room that was the magnet,” Watermann said. ”Everybody was just drawn to him.”
O’Malley instilled the scouts with lessons such as common sense and the pillars of manhood, according to Watermann.
“If they didn’t have a grandpa like him, that’s the grandpa they’d yearn to have,” Watermann said.
