Montgomery Rotary Gives VFW a New Look

The Rotary Club of Montgomery kicked off their year with a service project at the Montgomery VFW Memorial Post 7452. Club members were joined by members of the Village’s Beautification Committee as the volunteers cleaned up the landscaping and planted flowers, according to a village news release.

The group removed ground cover and dead tree limbs, trimmed bushes, replanted perennials and then planted flowers. The end result “far exceeded my expectations” according to Rotary President, Theresa Sperling.

Sperling met with then incoming VFW Commander Robert Bailey in May to establish a partnership and to discuss service projects and goals for each of the organizations. At that meeting, Sperling proposed planting flowers to soften up the look of the building. Bailey gave his blessing. Both are in new leadership positions with Bailey taking over as Commander in June and Sperling taking the lead of the Rotary Club July 1st.

The Rotary Club received help from family members, Barb Albright and Amalie Yen. In addition, the following members of the Beautification Committee worked on the project: Marion Bond, Judy Brown, Nancy Tranby, Kim Watkins, and Chair Stan Bond. The flowers were donated through Rotarian Steve Jungermann’s employer Twin Oaks Landscaping in Oswego.

Bailey, who is also a member of the Rotary Club, indicated that he had received numerous compliments on the new landscaping within a day of the work. Further, he said “The Montgomery VFW is blessed to have people like you in the community. On behalf of my post, I sincerely thank you all for today as well as all the other great work you do.”
