Oswego Schools Seeking Parent Input on Special Education Comprehensive Plan

Plan required in order for the district to withdraw from the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative

mmunity Unit School District 308 is seeking parent input for a comprehensive plan to design future special education services and programming.

The plan is a state requirement for School District 308 to be able to withdraw from the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative. The purpose of the focus groups is to determine programmatic strengths and weaknesses.

There are five parental focus groups scheduled in the month of September:

  • Opportunity School, Monday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in private day schools; and from7:30 to 9 p.m. for students in Opportunity School.
  • Prairie Point Elementary School, Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in general education; and from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for students with hearing impairment.
  • Southbury Elementary School, Thursday, Sept. 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in the diagnostic program; and from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for students in the STARS program.
  • Long Beach Elementary School, Monday, Sept. 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in general education; and from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for students in the SKILLS program.
  • Fox Chase Elementary School, Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in elementary resource and/or speech; and from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for students in instructional skills/life skills.

There are four parental focus groups scheduled in the month of October:

  • Bednarcik Junior High School, Monday, Oct. 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students receiving itinerant services, health orthopedic, visual or hearing impairment; from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for students in junior high resource and/or speech.
  • Murphy Junior High School, Thursday Oct. 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in general education; from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for students in the life skills/transition program.
  • Brokaw Early Learning Center, Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for students in elementary resource and/or speech; from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for students in the early childhood program.
  • Oswego East High School, Monday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for high school students in special education; from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for high school students in general education.

All sessions have a similar format, but differ according the specific program or services your child receives. If parents have a scheduling conflict, they are welcome to attend a different focus group, however.

Focus groups for special education and general education staff are also slated for September and October.

There are five focus groups scheduled in the month of September from 3:50 to 5:10 p.m.:

  • Opportunity School, Monday, Sept. 15, for Opportunity School staff.
  • Prairie Point Elementary School, Wednesday, Sept. 24, for Cooperative itinerant staff.
  • Southbury Elementary School, Thursday, Sept. 25, for Cooperative related service staff.
  • Long Beach Elementary School, Monday, Sept. 29, for ESP staff.
  • Fox Chase Elementary School, Tuesday, Sept. 30, for district special education teachers and speech pathologists.

There are six focus groups scheduled in the month of October from 3:50 to 5:10 p.m.:

  • Bednarcik Junior High School, Monday, Oct. 6, for Cooperative special education teachers.
  • Murphy Junior High School, Thursday, Oct. 9, for general education elementary teachers.
  • Brokaw Early Learning Center, Thursday, Oct. 16, for all Brokaw staff or divided.
  • Oswego East High School Common Atrium, Monday, Oct. 20, for general education and secondary.
  • East View Elementary School, Sept. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m., for Administrators.
  • Various junior high schools, high schools and Opportunity School, Friday, Oct. 3, all day, for students.
