School District 308 Honors Veterans With School Assemblies and Activities

Veterans Day is Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Community Unit School District 308 would like to wish all former military personnel a happy Veteran’s Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Here is a roundup of events happening around the district to honor our nation’s current and former soldiers:

Oswego High School – There will be veterans, and current military members speaking in classrooms to the students. Some of the veterans are OHS alums. This will be happening all periods of the day, from 7:20 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.

Oswego East High School – OEHS is doing a special Veteran’s Day-related workout in physical education classes.

Bednarcik Junior High School – Bednarcik plans to share information with students and staff about Veteran’s Day during their morning announcements. Private music lesson teacher Gene Arnold will play Taps on the trumpet for staff. Staff has also been asked to share pictures of family veterans that are being posted on a bulletin in the main office.

Plank Junior High School – Plank will host its 75th annual Veteran’s Day all school assembly from 1:55 p.m. to 2:55 p.m. in the gymnasium. Each year brings a unique gathering of community members, student talents, and outreach in honoring our men and women who have served in our country’s armed services. Plank will also have about 100 American Flags in the ground in the front of the school for Veteran’s Day.

Thompson Junior High School – Thompson will have an assembly beginning around8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. They invited veterans who are family members of Thompson students to the assembly, and a breakfast that is following.

Homestead Elementary School – Homestead will have its annual Veteran’s Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m., where we will welcome many Veteran’s as guests and share a PowerPoint honoring Veterans who are a related to Homestead students and staff.

Old Post Elementary School – Old Post is inviting veterans to join us in the classrooms this year from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. The classrooms will have activities and may have a Q&A for the veterans. We will also play the song for the various branches of service and have our fifth grade students lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the end of our sessions. Lastly, the veterans will take a group picture and receive a goodie bag. Old Post had about 34 veterans signed up to attend.

Southbury Elementary School –Southbury will be celebrating Veteran’s Day with a special assembly for veterans at 8:55 a.m.

The Wheatlands Elementary School – The Wheatlands will have its first grade Veteran’s Day assembly from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. The first graders will perform a medley of patriotic songs.

Churchill Elementary School – Churchill will have a Wall of Honor celebration with coffee and juice and a fifth grade musical from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Hunt Club Elementary School – Hunt Club is having a 9:30 a.m. assembly on Nov. 11 to honor veterans.
