Shots Fired After Resident Attempts To Interrupt Car Theft: Montgomery Police

MONTGOMERY, IL — Shots were fired early Tuesday morning when a Montgomery resident attempted to interrupt a car theft in the 2400 block of Mayfield Drive, police said.

Montgomery officers were called at about 4 a.m. to the area southwest of the Walmart Supercenter for a report of shots fired. The resident tried to intervene when someone was trying to steal a 2018 Dodge Durango that was parked in a driveway, according to a news release.

No one was injured in the shooting.

The thieves were able to get away with the stolen SUV, police said. But they left behind another stolen car that was connected to a theft earlier that night in Aurora, officials said.

Police used Flock cameras in the area to track the stolen Durango as it headed north. Kane County sheriff's deputies spotted the car and began pursuit along Orchard Road but ultimately stopped when the driver headed eastbound on Interstate 88. License plate readers tracked the car for several hours to find it in Chicago, officials said.

Three people were detained the following night when Illinois State Police found the stolen car. Police also recovered a gun that they determined fired the shots in Montgomery, according to investigators. Two people remained in custody as of Wednesday, but no names or charges have been released.

Multiple law enforcement agencies continue investigating the case. Montgomery police said they do not have additional information about potential charges.

Police urged residents to keep vehicles locked, remove valuables, use garages when possible, keep exterior lights on throughout the night, and consider security cameras that record several days of footage. Anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious should call 911 and not confront suspects.
