Skeletal Remains Found On Fox River Island: Sheriff

Canoeists found the remains while doing cleanup along the Fox River.

MONTGOMERY, IL — The Kendall County Sheriff's Office is investigating after canoeists taking part in a river cleanup found skeletal human remains on an island in the Fox River near the Route 30 overpass in Montgomery, police said. Members of the Prairie State Canoeists made the discovery just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Deputies, along with the Oswego Fire Department and Kendall County coroner's office, responded to the area Saturday morning.

Police said no further information was available for release.

George Stenitzer of Oswego and Doug Bosco of Chicago Ridge described their "bewildering" discovery to the Chicago Tribune. Bosco first spotted a man's high-top leather boot, which appeared to be fairly new, with human bones inside. Nearby, in the mud, were a skull and jaw bone.

"A lot of times you find old boots that get stuck," he told the Tribune. "I pulled and pulled, and finally got part of it and noticed there was a sock inside, and then I saw leg bones inside."
