Applications at NicorGas.com/CharitableGiving are open now  and close on May 31, with funding decisions by July 31. “At Nicor Gas, one way that we advance environmental stewardship is by funding community-based projects that improve and preserve local natural resources," said Jackie Nagel, manager of Community Engagement at Nicor Gas. “Through these initiatives, we aim to create lasting, positive impacts on the environments where our customers and employees live and work.”

As the largest natural gas provider in Illinois, Nicor Gas is committed to creating, maintaining and sustaining 10,000 acres of cultural, educational and recreational spaces in its service area.

Last year, the company awarded $100,000 in environmental stewardship grants to 21 organizations. Grants included:

Oaken Acres Wildlife Refuge & Rehab Center– Supported the removal of invasive species and brush in approximately two acres of a combination of grass and wooded areas and planted seeds for pollinators.

Algonquin Garden Club – Supported the planting of a Miyawaki Mini Forest in Dundee Township as part of the Mini Forest Alliance. The project featured 270 native trees and shrubs in a small area that boosted biodiversity and ecological health.
