📰 News we're reading

1. Naperville Native Claims He Burned Cross In Grant Park: Reports (patch.com) — A 21-year-old former Naperville resident who graduated from Neuqua Valley High School says he burned a cross in Chicago’s Grant Park as a protest against Trump, not as a racist act. Chicago police have a person of interest in custody, while city leaders and a prominent pastor have strongly condemned the incident and questioned his explanation.

2. Work Starts On $2.1M North Central College Riverwalk Park (patch.com) — Construction is underway on North Central College Riverwalk Park, a $2.1 million project that will better connect the college, Riverwalk, Friedenhagen Park, and downtown Naperville with accessible paths and a new gateway. Funded by state grants and Naperville’s Capital Project Fund, the park is expected to open by October and enhance scenic river access for residents and visitors.

3. Naperville council supports Block 59 deal for undisclosed new retailer (nctv17.org) — Naperville’s city council has approved increasing redevelopment reimbursements for the Block 59 business district by $1.85 million to help land a large, unnamed home-goods and furniture retailer at Westridge Court. Supporters say the deal should boost sales tax revenue and fill a key retail gap, while two councilmembers opposed shifting more private redevelopment risk onto taxpayers.

4. Softball: DuPage County All-Area captain Miller delivers when lights are brightest for DVC champ Naperville Central (dailyherald.com) — Naperville Central junior pitcher and slugger Avery Miller is honored as DuPage County’s All-Area captain after leading the Redhawks to a 25-10 record, an undefeated DVC title run, and a Class 4A regional championship. Coaches and teammates praise her dominant pitching, clutch hitting, and leadership, noting she still has room to grow heading into her senior year.
