Bat Tests Positive For Rabies In Naperville

Police are reminding residents of the risks of touching bats after a bat tested positive for rabies in Naperville.

NAPERVILLE, IL — A bat that was found in Naperville tested positive for rabies this week, prompting police to remind residents of safety measures when dealing with bats.

The bat was found in the 2000 block of Bunker Court, police say.

They urged residents never to touch a bat and to call Animal Control at 630-420-6178 if they find a bat.

Residents were also reminded to make sure their pets have updated rabies vaccinations.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), there are 13 different species of bats in Illinois. Most often, residents are likely to encounter little and big brown bats, silver-haired bats and eastern red bats.

The Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association reports that between 93 and 97 percent of bats will test negative for the rabies virus. Nonetheless, they advise that a bat should be considered rabid until a test has proven otherwise.

DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) reports that bats are the primary source of rabies in Illinois.

Residents are advised to seek medical attention immediately if they have been bitten by a bat. Pets should be taken to a veterinarian immediately if they may have been exposed to rabies
