NAPERVILLE, IL — A Naperville woman has been sentenced to 38 years in prison for the murder of her boyfriend in 2020. Rosa Lagrone, 40, was convicted in February after a four-day jury trial in the fatal shooting of Darnell Manns.

Lagrone and Manns were at her home in the 0-100 block of 25W Keswick Lane in unincorporated Naperville around 2:15 p.m. on Nov. 6, 2020, when they got into an argument about another woman, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Lagrone then shot Manns once, hitting his torso and arm and "lodging in his spine," the news release said.

While Manns was lying "on the floor in the background in a pool of blood," Lagrone called the other woman via video chat, the news release said.

Manns was taken to a nearby hospital and died on Nov. 9. Lagrone has been in custody at DuPage County Jail since Nov. 8.

She had been initially charged with attempted murder, domestic battery and aggravated battery with a firearm and was indicted on the first-degree murder charges on Nov. 19.

"Domestic violence continues to be a plague on society with the worst cases carrying permanent, heart-breaking consequences, as we saw in the murder of Darnell Manns," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

He added, "Judge Guerin's thirty-eight-year sentence sends a strong message that in DuPage County we will not tolerate this type of violent behavior. No number of years however, will bring Darnell back to those who loved him and those he loved. Their grief will far outlast Ms. Lagrone's sentence, and I wish them strength as they navigate their lives without the love, comfort and support once provided by Darnell."
