NAPERVILLE, IL — A death investigation temporarily halted trains and caused extensive delays early Tuesday near the Naperville station, according to Metra spokesperson Meg Thomas-Reile.
Thomas-Reile told Patch Metra received a report of a body on the tracks around 4 a.m. near the intersection of 5th Avenue and Loomis. She said the incident "greatly impacted" rush hour service for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Metra line, prompting at least nine trains to be canceled.
According to Thomas-Reile, Metra trains resumed travel around 6:50 a.m., with additional rush hour trains experiencing "significant delays."
Prior to the incident, the last Metra trains that passed through the area were an inbound train that left Aurora at 11:22 p.m. and an outbound train that got to Aurora at 1:29 a.m.
Thomas-Reile said she was unaware how many freight trains had traveled through the area in the overnight hours.
Naperville Police directed Patch to Metra Police for inquiries about the incident.
Tuesday's incident happened two days after an 18-year-old man was fatally struck by a train in Wheaton.
