NAPERVILLE, IL — Two women face felony charges after police say they stole items from a store in Naperville and fled cops before driving over spike strips in Oak Brook and being taken into custody.
Arterria Lipsey, 32, of Minnesota was charged with burglary, retail theft and aggravated fleeing and eluding, i addition to traffic offenses. Shataya Connor, 28, of Chicago, was charged with burglary and retail theft.
Police were called to Alo Yoga around 7:15 p.m. 19 W. Jefferson Ave. for a report of a retail theft/burglary. Lipsey and Connor are accused of stealing $1,694 in merchandise and then fleeing with Lipsey driving.
Prosecutors say Lipsey was spotted by an Elmhurst police officer heading east on I-290, but fled when the officer tried to pull her over. Lipsey is accused of reaching speeds of 82 mph and fleeing into Oak Brook, where the car was disabled by spike strips.
She was taken into custody and is being held at DuPage County Jail. Connor was released on her own recognizance.
"In DuPage County, you cannot simply enter a local business, help yourself to nearly seventeen hundred dollars' worth of merchandise, walk out without paying, and expect to get away with it," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
Berlin added, "What I find particularly upsetting in this case is the allegation that Arterria Lipsey, who was driving the getaway car, then led police on a dangerous high-speed chase, putting the officers involved and countless innocent motorists at great risk. Thankfully, no innocent motorists were injured or worse. Once again, I remind the motoring public, if you hear sirens and see flashing lights behind you, pull over. If you do not, we will use every tool at our disposal to apprehend you, including assistance from other agencies, as in this case."
Lipsey is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.
