AP: Sandra Bland Tried to Kill Herself Before Arrest

Bland's family attorney said there's no evidence Bland had tried to kill herself or had ever been treated for depression.

Sandra Bland, the 28-year-old former Naperville resident who allegedly killed herself in her jail cell, told a guard while she was being booked that she had previously tried to kill herself, the Associated Press reports.

Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith told AP that Bland provided the information while being asked questions that are given to each person booked in the jail.

Smith did not provide any more details about the conversation.

According to ABC 7, six pages of medical forms released by the Waller County district attorney show that Bland had checked no when asked on the form if she was thinking of killing herself. Another question asked if Bland had ever attempted suicide before. Bland checked yes and wrote ”2014, lost baby, pills.”

Cannon Lambert, the attorney for Bland’s family, said that relatives have no evidence that Bland had tried to commit suicide before or had ever been treated for depression.

Sharon Cooper, Bland’s sister, said Bland was down about losing a baby, but that it happened a year ago and she got past it.

Bland had previously recorded a video talking about her problems with depression and PTSD.

Bland was arrested July 10 for allegedly kicking an officer. She was initially pulled over for a traffic violation. She was found dead in her cell July 13. The official ruling for her death has been self-inflicted asphyxiation.

Bland’s arrest was also recorded by a bystander.

Bland was set to start a new job at Texas Prairie View A&M, where she graduated in 2009.

Family and friends have been rocked by her death and have called for an independent autopsy.
