City Council To Vote On Zoning Variances For Lacrosse Center And Gym In Naperville

The city's planning commission recently recommended approval of zoning variance requests for Jax Lax Club.

NAPERVILLE, IL — The Naperville City Council is set to review zoning variance requests for Jax Lax Club, a lacrosse training center and gym that looks to open at 655 N. Washington St.

The petitioner's requests for a parking facility setback variance and a parking space variance were given a positive recommendation by the city's planning and zoning commission during a public hearing on April 15.

The proposed Jax Lax Club facility would occupy the site's 6,405 square foot building, which was formerly home to an auto body shop.

The petitioner is planning to make changes to the building's facade and build a parking lot with nine parking spaces. This number of parking spaces is 17 fewer than the city's minimum requirement for a fitness facility, necessitating a zoning variance.

According to city documents, planning and zoning commissioners believe nine parking spaces would suffice for the facility's traffic. During daytime hours, "the building will host 2 to 3 personal trainers and clients," city documents state.

After 5 p.m., the facility will be used by the petitioner and the petitioner's son for lacrosse training.

The parking facility setback variance would allow the center's parking area to meet its northern property line. City code requires parking facilities to be located more than five feet from property lines.

Planning and zoning commissioners found that approving the request will increase the parking lot's paved surface area and allow for a space that is ADA accessible.

The city council will consider Jax Lax Club's request at its May 19 meeting.

Jax Lax Club has locations in Jacksonville, St. Johns and Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
