Cops Offer Safety Tips As Kids Head Back To School In Naperville

NAPERVILLE, IL — As kids in Naperville head back to school, police are sharing tips to help keep students safe.

Police recommend using the following tips as safety guidelines for students:

  • Encourage kids to walk with a friend or group of friends
  • Stay within crosswalks and obey traffic signals and crossing guards
  • Check with parents or trusted grownups if approached by a stranger
  • Report suspicious activity
  • Know your bus number and address, along with a parent's cellphone number

Drivers should also use caution, police urge. The following tips are recommended for drivers in Naperville:

  • Budget time to allow for bus-related delays
  • Obey traffic signals and stop completely ahead of crosswalks
  • Heed speed limits, especially near schools
  • Fully stop to accommodate children getting onto or off of school buses
  • Watch for children near school buses
  • Avoid distracted driving
  • Park in designated areas
  • Lock cars when they are unattended
  • Discuss safety tips with teen drivers
