Coroner IDs Driver in Fiery Naperville Crash

The 33-year-old man died after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree.

NAPERVILLE, IL — The driver who died in a fiery car crash July 11 in Naperville has been identified as a 33-year-old Indiana man.

Abel Clay, 33, of Hammond, Indiana, was driving a 2015 Dodge ProMaster van southbound on Washington between Bauer Road and 14th Street at around 1:43 a.m. July 11 when his vehicle left the road, struck a tree and burst into flames.

Clay’s body was found inside and he was pronounced dead at 2:18 a.m. Due to his body being burned beyond recognition, dental records were used to identify him.

Toxicology and autopsy reports are still pending.
